Is the Phantom of the Opera actually evil or just totally misunderstood?

i honestly don't know anyone who thinks that the phantom is evil. any creature capable of love wouldn't be considered evil. if you have come across people who think this way, they may not know the story, have never seen it, or are totally ignorant to any kind of romantic metephors. erik maybe considered wicked b/c of the choices he makes and the consequences of, which would eventually lead to his downfall.
